Calling All JavaScript Writers

Calling All JavaScript WritersKeeping a blog maintained solo, while creating useful projects and making updates to the design of the site, can be quite the stressful for a husband and father. I’m having a hard time keeping up the pace. I started this blog because I love JavaScript and I wanted to help other JavaScripters keep up with the times and learn, but now I need some help fulfilling that dream. If you know anything about JavaScript and can write relatively well, I’d like to hear from you.

What I Need From You

I’m not asking much from you, but I am still asking for something:

  • Knowledge of JavaScript. You don’t need a whole lot of knowledge. In fact, part of the reason I created this blog was to help beginners, so if you’re just starting out and have something to share that may be of some use the other newbies, then you can write for this blog.
  • 350 Words / 5 minutes. 350 words isn’t much but it’s a good minimum to guarantee we’re not completely wasting the readers’ time. Obviously we’d all prefer it being longer than this, but I’m not looking for 2000 words or anything. If you’re writing much more than 1000 words, you’re probably just going to get some people posting TLDR. If you’re making a screencast, I want it to be at least 5 minutes, which isn’t much, in addition to at least 200 words.
  • Monthly Contribution. I’m not going to be strict about this, but if you can help out about once per month, that would be preferable. If you want, you can write a single article and submit that to me, but I’m going to reserve one of the “perks” mentioned below for regular authors. I’ll talk about it a bit more later.

What You’ll Get From Me

Sadly, since I currently make little to no money from this blog I cannot offer you any money for writing, but here’s what I can do for you:

  • About the Author. At the bottom of each post, I will place a small box that gives a short description about you, the author. You can include anything in there about yourself, but if you’re going to promote links, please keep them related to web development. The only exceptions to this are social media profiles.
  • Author Profile Page. If you write regularly, I will create an entire page dedicated to you. Think of it as the About the Author box on steroids. You may say anything about yourself and as much as you want. You can promote any links you wish, including links not related to web development. The About the Author box will have a link to this author profile.

Sign Me Up Scotty!

If you’re interested in becoming a writer for this blog go ahead and Contact Me. I promise to reply to every email (unlike Nettuts+ who hasn’t replied to any of the 4 emails I’ve sent them in the past couple months). Eventually, if I believe you to be “worthy”, I’ll send you more information about how to get this done. So, what are you waiting for? Write me an email today! God Bless and Happy Coding!

Good idea, but i think renaming the blog (new domain) is necessary.

Just because I’m not the only writer, doesn’t mean it’s not my blog, though I have been seriously contemplating that. This blog originally was supposed to be updated far less often and I wasn’t expecting it to get this much traffic (yet I believed I could earn more money off of it than I am :P ). Anyway, I have an awesome idea for a new logo, which would work well with a name change (though it would work without the name change too). I just think it’s too much work to change the domain. I’d have to keep paying for this domain so that I could get traffic forwarded to the new domain (not that it’s all that expensive). Then I’d have to update every site that has the logo and/or URL listed. Heck, my Twitter name and Facebook page URL would need to change, which would mean I’d have a heck of a time shifting all the followers over. Let’s just say I’m not ready for a change yet and I can’t guarantee a change will ever happen.

You may want to consider checking the ego a little… everyone knows its your site. Also, while I agree that it’s certainly more professional to respond to emails that to ignore them, I doubt you have any idea of the volume of correspondence a site like Nettuts will deal with on a daily basis. However impressed you are by your own traffic, theirs is considerably greater, and their contact email accounts considerably more active. There is also the possibility that what you submitted to that was not good enough!

As for money and effort, It takes a lot of patience, quality (and occasionally unique) content, and (sorry to tell you this) a lot of work to turn a blog into something that will actually make money for you. I don’t know for sure if a name change is necessary, but if you wanted to grow it to a Nettuts like level, it’s not the best domain for such a network/community. If the idea that you might have to do some work for a just name change puts you off, and at such an early stage (yes.. early stage – however well you think you’re doing, traffic wise) then you should give up now before you end up letting anyone down.

I really wish you the best of luck, but man, you need to get over yourself. You’re not the Shakespeare of JS blogging, nor will you ever become so without the willingness to put in the hours.

          Hi Steve,

I’m sorry if I came off egotistical at all, but I don’t see where you’re getting that from, maybe from my sarcasm, maybe just because I don’t want to change the name of the site yet. I’m not saying that I have a lot of traffic, just more than I expected. Nettuts+ gets well over a million visitors each month and I get around 10k.

I’m not saying I’m not willing to work hard, I just don’t see this site really needing an updated name/URL yet. I will still be the owner of the domain and hosting, I will still be the primary writer, and I will still be the one who puts everything onto the website (others’ articles, my articles, other updates). This is still very much my blog.

I know Nettuts+ receives a lot of email, but they said so themselves, that they wouldn’t pay any mind to an email that is only a few lines long, meaning that they should pay some attention to a well-thought-out email. It’s entirely unprofessional to ignore someone who sincerely wants to make contact with your company, regardless of the volume of emails they receive. A simple standardized email saying “Sorry, but you didn’t fit the bill” would be plenty.

Ready wiling, and able, Joe. But your “contact me” page rejected my response in I.E.. 9 and Chrome, 20 — overall rejection or rejection of the anti-spam code. Hershel Chicowitz — hchicowitz at AOL

Sorry about that. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the caching breaking the captcha. For now the captcha has been removed. Please try again.
